From the Principal - Lisa Cavanagh
Dear Holy Name Families,
Last week, I attended the Term 2 Leadership Forum in Stanthorpe. It was a fantastic opportunity for me to engage in some professional learning with my fellow principals. In his keynote address to the group, our Executive Director, Dr Pat Coughlan spoke about the importance of schools playing to their strengths and being the difference makers in the community. As part of the address, we were asked to reflect on the strengths of our school community. This is what I saw as our strengths -
- Relationships – a welcoming community (staff, students, parents, parish)
- Caring and dedicated staff
- A supportive parent community
- Small student numbers VS large, spacious grounds
- Our amazing Holy Name students
Creating a culture of change and feedback takes time. I certainly appreciate the Holy Name School community’s willingness to embrace the changes we have been making for the benefit of our staff, students and school community.
Under 8s Day – Connecting to Culture through Play
A huge thank you to our Early Year Staff and Mrs Manthey for all their organisation for our Under 8s Day celebrations on Monday. It was wonderful to have so many parents come along to join in the activities. A special thank you to the members of the Holy Name P&F who came along to cook the sausage sizzle for everyone and ensure that everyone had a coffee. We welcomed several of our 2025 prep students with their parents and the generosity of our P&F was a topic of conversation.
The Under 8s Day activities students participated in included:
- Face Painting with Mrs Kauter and Mrs Melville
- Sensory Play with Ms Inskip and Mrs Wagstaff
- Painting with Miss Bronkhurst
- Threading with Mrs Mills
- Dance with Mrs Manthey
- Story time with Mr Schonfeld
- Outdoor games with Mr Maloney (and Viola and Preston)
- Pietra Kids (Christian meditation and movement) with Fiona Webb
- Godly Play with Lee ann Weekes from TCS
- Bush tucker tasting with Doug and Tracey from Native Oz Bushfoods
- Cooking with Miss Nadine from Holy Name OSHC
- Visits from BOTH Queensland Ambulance and Queensland Fire and Rescue
Our year 6 students were magnificent helpers on the day, either as a group leader or assisting run a session with staff. They were such great ambassadors for our school and were quite excited to receive some of our Holy Name ‘merch’ as a thank you.
Catholic Education Week
Catholic Education Week is an important one in the calendar of the Catholic School. During this week, we celebrate our Catholic Identity as a school community. This year, we will begin our Catholic Education Week Celebrations with a Mass with the Holy Name Parish Community on Sunday the 21st of July at 8:30am. Sunday morning Mass at Holy Name is always followed by a shared morning tea, and all are welcomed.
At this Mass, the ministries will be filled by the staff and students from the school (readers, offertory, welcoming) and the choir will lead the singing. I invite all Holy Name School families to save this date and join with our parish community to celebrate Catholic Education.
Term 2 Fees
Thank you to all those families who have already paid their Term 2 school fees. We appreciate your commitment to this. As always, if you are experiencing difficulties, please give us a call to set up a time to discuss.
Mercy Moments
On 10 May we pay tribute to Ellen Whitty and her five companions, who bravely responded to Bishop Quinn’s call and established the first Sisters of Mercy in Queensland back in 1861. Let us never forget the pioneering spirit and unwavering commitment of these extraordinary women whose courage and compassion continue to inspire us. Let’s keep Ellen Whitty and the Sisters of Mercy in our minds as we contemplate these blessings:
She was a light –filled soul: may her words enkindle our spirits and inspire us to vision a better world
She was a risk taker: may her actions embolden us to overcome our fears and fight for justice
She was faith filled: may her deep trust in God gently lead us in our own spiritual path
She was courageous: may her example help us to embrace hope and confidence during times of sorrow and difficulty
She was a nurturer: may her care and compassion for others be a template for our own relationships with those with whom we live and work
She was a lover of life: may her enthusiasm, humour, joy and capacity for inspiring others help encourage us in our own life.
And may the love of God go with us this day and forever. Amen.

National Reconciliation Week – Now More Than Ever (27 May-03 June 2024)
The National Reconciliation Week theme for 2024, Now More Than Ever, is a reminder to all of us that no matter what, the fight for justice and the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people will – and must – continue. To acknowledge the impact of the policies spanning more than 150 years of forcible removal of First Nations Australian children from their families, we will be holding a Prayer Celebration in classrooms on Friday 24 May at 8.30am. Let us take the time to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.
Prayer
God of love and compassion, you are the creator of this land and of all good things.
We pray for your strength and grace to forgive, accept and love one another and to see you in the faces of all those we meet.
May the spirit of reconciliation fill our hearts, our minds and our deeds.
We ask this through Jesus, our model and guide.
Amen.
Blessings
